Offline guides for Nepal’s treks: what they do, when they come out and how they work with no signal. Updated 25 October 2026.
Himalayan Guide in short
What is Himalayan Guide?
Himalayan Guide is a series of offline trekking-guide apps for iPhone, one for each of Nepal’s main trekking regions: Everest (Khumbu), Annapurna, Manaslu, Langtang and Kanchenjunga. Each app holds the map, the routes, every village and pass and the names of the peaks around you, and keeps working when the phone has no signal.
When will Everest Trek Guide, Annapurna Trek Guide and Manaslu Trek Guide come out?
Everest Trek Guide comes first, in January 2027. Annapurna Trek Guide and Manaslu Trek Guide follow in February 2027, then Langtang Trek Guide and Kanchenjunga Trek Guide in September 2027. None of the apps is on the App Store yet: leave your email on the home page and we will write to you on release day.
How much will the apps cost?
The price will be shown on each app’s App Store page on release day. Purchases go through the App Store, so Apple handles payment and refunds, and there is no account or sign-up to create.
Who makes Himalayan Guide?
Himalayan Guide is made in Ukraine by Anton Yankovyi (Anton Jankovoy). Questions, corrections from the trail and ideas are welcome at support@himalayan.guide.
On the trail without signal
Do the apps work without internet or mobile signal?
Yes. The map, routes, place cards, walking times and the 3D Panorama are stored on the phone, so they work on the trail with no signal, and the Panorama works even in flight mode. Everest Trek Guide goes online only for the weather forecast (from MET Norway), iCloud sync and App Store purchases.
Can I navigate offline on the Everest Base Camp trek?
Yes. The offline map in Everest Trek Guide shows contours, finds places and gives walking directions without a network, and the iPhone’s GPS works without signal. You can follow a route, get an alert when you stray off it, record your own GPS track and export it as GPX.
What does the app tell me about each village, pass and viewpoint?
Each place has a card with its altitude, what is there and how far it is to the next place. The Everest region alone has 86 places in the app, including 29 overnight stops, the passes Kongma La (5,535 m), Cho La (5,420 m) and Renjo La (5,360 m), and viewpoints such as Kala Patthar (5,643 m), Chhukung Ri (5,546 m) and Gokyo Ri (5,357 m).
Treks and routes
Which treks are in the apps?
Everest Trek Guide has 20 routes in the Khumbu, among them Everest Base Camp, the Gokyo lakes, the Chhukung valley and the three high passes. Annapurna Trek Guide has 14: the Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base Camp, Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, Khopra, Nar Phu and Tilicho. Manaslu Trek Guide has 17, including the Manaslu Circuit, Tsum Valley and the Barpak approach.
How many days do the routes take?
In Everest Trek Guide routes run from 4 to 23 days, each with a day-by-day plan and an elevation profile. The shortest, the Everest View Trek, takes 4 days: about 47 km to Namche Bazaar and the Everest View Hotel terrace, with a highest point of 4,251 m. Manaslu Trek Guide routes run from 9 to 25 days.
How long does it take to walk between two places?
The Trails Map gives a walking time for every stretch, in both directions. For example, from Gokyo (4,750 m) to Gokyo Ri (5,357 m) you climb 560 m in 2–2.5 hours and come back down in 1–1.5 hours. The trails are drawn over the relief, so you can see where the climbing is.
Is the Great Himalaya Trail included?
Yes. Every app includes the Great Himalaya Trail sections of its region, for those who keep walking beyond the classic treks.
Peaks and the Panorama
Is there an app that names the mountains you see in the Himalaya?
Yes: the Panorama in every Himalayan Guide app. Raise the phone and it names the summits in front of you, with their heights, a compass and the path of the sun and moon. It is built from a terrain model (Copernicus DEM) and peak data (GeoNames, Himalayan Database). Everest Trek Guide names 289 peaks, Annapurna Trek Guide 201 and Manaslu Trek Guide 269.
Which peaks can I see from Gokyo Ri or Kala Patthar?
Open the Panorama at the viewpoint and it labels every visible summit with its height and distance. From Gokyo Ri (5,357 m), for example, it shows Everest (8,849 m, 24 km away), Lhotse (8,516 m, 25 km) and Makalu (8,485 m, 41 km), with the sunrise and sunset times over the ridge.
Can I put the peak names on my photos?
Yes. In the Panorama’s camera view the names sit over the real ridge: turn the relief off, keep just the names, take the shot and send it home in one tap.
Altitude and safety
Can the app help with acclimatisation?
Everest Trek Guide has an acclimatisation diary: each day you note how you feel, your pulse and SpO₂, and the diary shows them beside your altitude and heart rate from Apple Health, so you can see how your body is adapting. Its guidance is not a diagnosis and does not replace medical help or an experienced guide.
Does the app have an SOS card and a Nepali phrasebook?
Yes, in Everest Trek Guide: an SOS card with your details for rescuers, a doctor or a guide, a directory of contacts, a phrasebook with 244 spoken Nepali phrases and 83 handbook articles on preparation, health and safety, the trail, weather and culture. The app does not call for help by itself: you dial from the directory when there is signal.
iPhone, iPad and languages
Which iPhones does it run on? Is there an iPad version?
The apps run on iPhone with iOS 17 or later, with every screen laid out for the size in your hands, from iPhone SE to iPhone Pro Max. Layouts for iPad and the foldable iPhone Duo are part of the release plan.
Which languages do the apps speak?
Ten: English, Spanish, French, German, Ukrainian, Russian, Hebrew, Korean, Japanese and Nepali. Everything is translated, from the interface to the description of every place and every hint.
Does Everest Trek Guide have widgets?
Yes: Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets, 21 kinds in all, so the day’s numbers are visible without opening the app.
No. There is no account, sign-up or email address. Routes, progress, settings, the acclimatisation diary and the SOS card stay on your iPhone; with iCloud on, some records are copied to your own Apple ID. The app has no server of its own, no ads and no tracking. Details: Everest Trek Guide privacy policy.
