Everest Trek Guide
Privacy Policy
Everest Trek Guide works without an account, without ads and without tracking. Your routes and tracks stay on your iPhone and, if you use it, in your private iCloud; health readings stay on your iPhone.
In short
- The app needs no account, sign-up or e-mail address.
- Routes, progress, settings, the acclimatization diary and the SOS card are stored on your iPhone.
- Location, motion, camera and Apple Health are used only after you allow them in iOS, and only in the features you open.
- If iCloud is on, some of your records are copied automatically to the private database of your Apple ID. There is no Everest Trek Guide server.
- The app goes online only for the weather forecast (MET Norway) and for Apple services: iCloud and the App Store.
- No ads, no ad tracking, no profiling, no sale of data.
Who is responsible
Everest Trek Guide is developed and distributed on the App Store by Anton Yankovyi (“we”). Address: Ukraine. For privacy questions, write to support@himalayan.guide.
This policy covers only the Everest Trek Guide iPhone app and its widgets. The himalayan.guide website and the other Himalayan Guide apps may have their own policies.
What stays on your iPhone
You create this data, and it is stored locally on your device:
- your own routes and notes, marks for completed parts of a route, map pins;
- app settings;
- recorded GPS tracks and imported GPX files;
- the local history of the Condition section (acclimatization diary, steps, altitude);
- the SOS card with the contacts and medical details you enter, and its photo (stored encrypted);
- offline maps, terrain and reference data that ship with the app.
Home Screen widgets show app data from shared storage on the same iPhone.
iOS permissions
iOS asks for each kind of access separately. You can decline, or change your mind at any time in iPhone Settings → Everest Trek Guide. Without a permission, only the related feature stops working; the rest of the app stays available.
Location (while using the app)
Used on your request to find your current altitude, show you on the offline map, build a walking route, navigate and record a GPS track. Navigation or recording that you start keeps running after the screen locks until you end it. The app does not send your location to us or to third-party services; completed tracks can only reach your private iCloud (see below).
Motion & Fitness
Motion data is processed on the device: steps and altitude for the Condition section, and the phone’s heading so that Panorama lines up with the view, only while that screen is open.
Apple Health (read only)
The app reads only the readings you allow: sleep, heart rate, resting heart rate and blood oxygen (SpO₂). They are shown on the dashboard and in the local acclimatization diary. The app writes nothing to Apple Health, does not use this data for advertising and does not share it with third parties. Apple Health data is not part of the app’s iCloud copy.
Health readings are for reference only. The app does not diagnose anything and does not replace a doctor.
Camera
On your request: for photos with peak outlines and names in Panorama, and for the photo on the SOS card. Images are processed on the iPhone and are not sent anywhere.
Add to Photos
Only when you choose to save it on the photo screen, the app adds a finished AR shot to your library. The app cannot read your photo library.
Notifications
Permission is requested only the first time you start navigation or track recording. Notifications are local (for example, an off-route alert) and respect Silent Mode, Focus and your notification settings. There are no marketing notifications.
iCloud sync
When iCloud is available on the iPhone, the app automatically syncs your own routes and notes, progress, pins, settings and completed GPS/GPX tracks to the private database of your Apple ID. This lets your records appear on your other devices and survive a new phone. Apple stores this data under the Apple Privacy Policy; we have no access to your private iCloud database.
The iCloud copy does not include: active navigation and unfinished track recording, Apple Health data, system permissions, offline maps, terrain and caches, or the SOS card (its encryption key exists only on this iPhone). After an Apple ID change, uploads pause until you explicitly confirm.
You can turn sync off in iPhone Settings → [your name] → iCloud.
When the app goes online
Maps, routes and Panorama work offline. The network is used only for the following:
Weather forecast — MET Norway
When the weather is on screen and the stored forecast is older than 3 hours, the app downloads a temperature and precipitation forecast from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway), one short request per point. The requests contain only the coordinates and elevations of fixed trail points from a catalog built into the app, plus the app name and our support address, which MET Norway asks every app to send. Your location and any device or account identifiers are not part of them. As with any visit to a website, MET Norway sees the IP address the requests come from. There is no background weather refresh. See theMET Norway terms of service.
Apple services
iCloud sync (above) and App Store purchases run on Apple services and are covered by the Apple Privacy Policy.
External links
The Sources & Licenses section links to the websites of data providers. They open in the browser only when you tap them, and those sites have their own policies.
Purchases
The app has a free part and Everest Premium. Apple handles payment, subscriptions and refunds entirely through the App Store. We do not receive your payment details. The app only receives confirmation from the App Store of which purchases are active, to unlock Premium, and can restore them with the Restore Purchases button.
What the app does not do
- it does not require an account and does not collect your name, e-mail or phone number;
- it shows no ads and contains no third-party advertising or analytics SDKs;
- it does not track you across other companies’ apps and websites (App Tracking Transparency is not used);
- it does not sell your data or share it for profiling;
- it does not send us your routes, tracks, location or health readings.
Separately from the app: if sharing analytics with app developers is turned on in iPhone Settings, Apple may pass us de-identified crash and usage reports. This is an iOS setting you control in Settings → Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements.
How data is protected
The SOS card and its photo are stored encrypted (AES-GCM, Apple CryptoKit). The key is kept in this iPhone’s Keychain, is available only while the phone is unlocked and never moves to other devices. Other local data is protected by iOS, and the iCloud copy by Apple.
How to delete your data
- Settings → Reset All Data in the app deletes your route changes, completion marks, the local Condition history and settings. The professional base routes and your Apple Health records stay.
- The SOS card is erased with Clear My Data on the SOS screen; its photo can be deleted in the card editor.
- Apple Health access is revoked in iPhone Settings or in the Health app.
- Deleting the app from your iPhone deletes all of its local data.
- The iCloud copy can be reviewed and deleted in iPhone Settings → [your name] → iCloud.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to know what data about you is processed, to correct or delete it, and to complain to a data protection authority. We have no servers holding your data, so you can do most of this yourself on the iPhone, as described above. Send any request to support@himalayan.guide.
The app does not collect personal data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If the app starts handling data differently, we will update this page and the effective date at the top before that version is released.
