Common questions

Does the app work without internet?

Yes. The offline map of the Everest region, routes, elevation profiles, Panorama with peak names and the field guide are already inside the app. You don’t need mobile signal or Wi-Fi on the trail.

The internet is needed only for the weather forecast, iCloud sync and App Store purchases. Offline, the app shows the last saved forecast.

Why does the app need location, motion and Apple Health?
  • Location — to show you on the offline map, find your altitude, navigate and record a GPS track. Navigation or recording you start keeps running with the screen locked until you end it.
  • Motion & Fitness — steps and altitude in Condition, and the phone’s heading in Panorama.
  • Apple Health — read-only sleep, heart rate, resting heart rate and SpO₂ for the acclimatization diary. The app writes nothing to Health.
  • Camera — for AR shots in Panorama and the photo on the SOS card.

Everything is processed on the iPhone. Details are in the privacy policy.

I declined a permission. How do I turn it back on?

Open iPhone Settings → Everest Trek Guide and turn on the access you need. Apple Health access can be changed there or in the Health app. The app has a shortcut: Settings → System Permissions.

How does iCloud sync work?

If iCloud is on, the app syncs your own routes and notes, progress, pins, settings and completed GPS/GPX tracks to the private database of your Apple ID by itself. No separate account is needed.

Not synced: active navigation and unfinished recording, Apple Health data, the SOS card, offline maps and caches. After an Apple ID change the app asks you to confirm first. To see your records on another iPhone, sign in there with the same Apple ID and iCloud turned on.

How do I back up or move my data by hand?

Settings → Data → Export Backup puts your routes, progress, pins, settings and completed GPS tracks into one file that you can keep anywhere. Import Backup first shows what the file contains, then safely merges it with your current data. A single track can be exported as GPX.

How do I restore my Premium purchase?

Open Settings → Everest Premium and tap Restore Purchases, signed in with the Apple ID you bought with. Purchases that are already active are usually picked up automatically.

Subscriptions are managed in iPhone Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions. Apple handles payment and refunds; request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Where does the weather forecast come from?

The temperature and precipitation forecast comes from MET Norway. The app requests it for fixed points on the trail, not for your location, and only when you open the weather and the stored forecast is older than 3 hours.

How do I delete my data?
  • Settings → Reset All Data deletes your route changes, completion marks, local Condition history and settings. Base routes and your Apple Health records stay.
  • SOS card — Clear My Data on the SOS screen.
  • iCloud copy — iPhone Settings → [your name] → iCloud.
  • Deleting the app removes all of its local data from the iPhone.
Can I rely on the app in an emergency?

Everest Trek Guide is a planning and navigation tool. It is not a rescue service, not a medical service and not a weather forecast to base decisions on. The app itself does not call for help or send your location anywhere: you dial a number from the directory yourself, as a normal iPhone call, when there is signal.

The SOS card and directory help you quickly show rescuers, a doctor or a guide your details and the right contacts. In danger, contact local services, your guide, the lodge owner or your insurer. Check conditions on the spot, watch for symptoms of altitude sickness, and don’t rely on the phone alone: it can run flat or freeze.

Which devices does Everest Trek Guide run on?

iPhone with iOS 17 or later.
